The Supreme Court is set to examine whether all border states should be treated uniformly in demarcating the area of jurisdiction for the Border Security Force (BSF). This comes in response to Punjab’s dispute against the Centre’s decision to extend the BSF’s jurisdiction from 15 km to 50 km along the Indo-Pakistan border. The court will assess whether the Centre’s move encroaches on Punjab’s legislative domain and examine the constitutional validity of the notification issued in October 2021. The issues to be considered include whether the extension exceeds the “local limits of area adjoining the borders of India” and the factors influencing BSF jurisdiction. The hearing is scheduled for the third week of April.
