A study conducted by researchers in China suggests that administering ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) alongside statins can potentially mitigate the risk of statins inducing glucose intolerance and diabetes. Statins, widely prescribed for cardiovascular disease, have been associated with an increased risk of diabetes in some individuals. The study found that UDCA restored impaired glucose homeostasis in individuals taking statins without compromising the lipid-lowering effects of the medication. The mechanism involves UDCA’s influence on the gut microbiome and bile acid profiles. Further research, including randomized clinical trials, is needed to validate these findings.
