The Supreme Court has taken over 27 pending writ petitions from nine State High Courts challenging the 28% Goods and Services Tax (GST) on online real-money gaming. Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud emphasized the need for a unified decision rather than varying judgments across different High Courts. These petitions will now be linked with a Karnataka High Court case regarding GST on digital Rummy. The case is scheduled for tentative hearing on May 1 and 2. Previously, the Supreme Court had issued notice to the Centre based on a plea by the E-gaming Federation. The GST council’s decision to tax online gaming uniformly, without distinction between skill-based and chance-based games, sparked the controversy.
