An analysis by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) highlights a remarkable 104% increase in the number of political parties contesting Lok Sabha elections from 2009 to 2024. In the upcoming elections, 751 parties are participating, compared to 677 in 2019. The analysis of 8,337 candidates’ affidavits reveals concerning trends: 443 out of 1,333 candidates from national parties, 249 out of 532 from state parties, 401 out of 2,580 from registered unrecognised parties, and 550 out of 3,915 independent candidates face criminal cases. Additionally, 2,572 candidates are crorepatis, underlining the financial disparities in Indian politics.
