China’s coast guard boarded a Taiwanese tourist boat, King Xia, near the Kinmen archipelago, escalating tensions in the area controlled by Taiwan but claimed by China. The incident lasted about 32 minutes on Monday, and Taiwan’s coast guard escorted the boat back to Kinmen. The move comes amid increased Chinese military activities following Taiwan’s election of a pro-independence president. Taiwan’s premier called for resolving the matter properly, urging a rational, reciprocal, and cooperative approach to maintain security. China blamed Taiwan for the drowning of two fishermen, and its coast guard will regularly monitor waters near Kinmen.
