Taiwan’s Vice President, William Lai, embarked on a trip to Paraguay to strengthen relations with its last diplomatic partner in South America, amid China’s increasing efforts to isolate the island. Lai’s journey includes stops in San Francisco and New York City, which China criticized. Taiwan, considered a part of China by the mainland, maintains a separate government and identity. Paraguay is among the remaining 12 countries recognizing Taiwan diplomatically. China’s actions, such as military exercises and missile launches near Taiwan, have intensified. Lai aims to emphasize Taiwan’s democratic values and international engagement during his trip.
