Tesla has initiated the construction of a $200 million plant in Shanghai’s Lingang pilot free trade zone to manufacture its Megapack energy storage batteries, marking its first battery plant outside the U.S. The move underscores Tesla’s commitment to investing in China and defying trends of disengagement from the country. Scheduled to commence mass production in early 2025 with an initial capacity of 10,000 units annually, the Megapack batteries are designed to store over 3.9 megawatt hours of energy, catering primarily to utility companies and commercial facilities.
