India’s efforts to bolster domestic mobile phone and electronics manufacturing have shown significant growth over the nine years of Narendra Modi’s leadership, with electronic goods production increasing over fourfold to Rs 8.2 lakh crores from Rs 1.9 lakh crore. Despite this progress, demand has outpaced production. In 2014-15, India consumed double the value of electronics produced, and by 2022-23, the situation hadn’t improved, leading to the need to import about a third of demand. Forecasts predict continued demand growth, reaching Rs 14.9 lakh crores within three years. To address this, the Production Linked Incentive Scheme was introduced to support manufacturers, aiming for a production target of Rs 24.9 lakh crore by 2025-26.
The PLI scheme helps Indian manufacturing, but not enough to fulfill rising demand
