The Rajya Sabha has passed the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, following its earlier approval by the Lok Sabha on August 7. The legislation aims to protect citizens’ personal data and stems from the Supreme Court’s recognition of the Right to Privacy as a fundamental right in 2016. Originally introduced as the Personal Data Protection (PDP) Bill in 2018, it was later replaced with the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill in 2022 due to compliance-related reasons. The law sets obligations for private and government entities regarding data collection and processing. The Bill now awaits the assent of President Draupadi Murmu to become law.
