Preparations for the third phase of archaeological excavation at Vembakottai in Virudhunagar district have commenced, with the cleaning of 1.5 acres of land on the 25-acre mound. Scheduled to start in early June on the north bank of the Vaippar river, the excavation aims to uncover more about the area’s history. Previous phases yielded 7,914 artefacts, indicating human habitation dating back 2,000 years. LiDAR scanning guided the selection of the excavation site, which may expand based on findings. The first two phases covered a total of 5 acres and revealed valuable insights into the region’s past.
