On Human Rights Day, Penpa Tsering, the President of the Tibetan government-in-exile, accused China of denying fundamental human rights in Tibet and exterminating the Tibetan identity. Tsering criticized China’s recent “white paper” on Tibet, emphasizing the Chinese Communist Party’s efforts to promote Sinicisation of Tibetan Buddhism, develop socialist values, and appoint Chinese officials in Tibetan areas. The statement was made on the 34th anniversary of the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to the Dalai Lama. Tibet’s spiritual leader has been based in Dharamshala, India, since fleeing Tibet in 1959 after a failed uprising against Chinese rule.
