TikTok and Meta, owner of Facebook, are challenging new European Union rules intended to address the dominance of digital giants and enhance online competition. TikTok contests its classification as an online “gatekeeper,” asserting its role as a new social media competitor. Meta disagrees with the EU’s decision to include its Marketplace and Messenger under gateway services in the Digital Markets Act (DMA) and is seeking legal clarification. The DMA, set to take effect by March, aims to enforce fair competition and user choice, with penalties for non-compliance. Amazon, Apple, Google, Microsoft, ByteDance, and Meta were labeled gatekeepers in September.
