The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is deliberating the regulation of over-the-top (OTT) communication apps like WhatsApp and Telegram. TRAI announced plans for an open house discussion within the next two to three months to finalize recommendations on this matter. Despite the recent enactment of the Telecom Act 2023, which removed OTT regulation provisions, TRAI Chairman Anil Kumar Lahoti affirmed that ongoing consultations would proceed as planned. The consultation, initiated following a Parliamentary panel recommendation, aims to address concerns surrounding OTT services, signaling continued regulatory scrutiny in the telecom sector.
