The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has directed telecom service providers to obtain new digital consent from subscribers before sending commercial messages or voice calls. This initiative, known as Digital Consent Acquisition (DCA), renders existing consents acquired through various means as null and void. TRAI aims to combat spam and unsolicited commercial communications by establishing a unified digital consent registration platform. The regulator initially issued this directive in June 2023, requiring access providers to implement DCA. It also urged principal entities to commence consent collection from September 1. TRAI now emphasizes the adoption of this new system by all principal entities and telcos.
