A report by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) suggests that over 800 coal-fired power plants in emerging countries could be profitably replaced by solar energy starting from the end of this decade. Despite only a small fraction of coal plants being scheduled for closure by 2030, the potential for more closures exists if viable opportunities are identified. The transition is driven by the need to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, with around 15.5 billion metric tons generated annually by existing coal power.
