The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has confirmed it will not host the United Nations’ COP29 climate summit next year, dispelling rumors of a back-to-back event following COP28 in Dubai. The summit was originally designated for Eastern Europe, but Russian opposition to holding it in an EU country has left the event without a venue. The UAE clarified its stance, with Majid Al Suwaidi, director general of COP28, stating they have not been asked and have no intention of hosting COP29. Geopolitical tensions, notably the Ukraine war, have complicated venue selection, and if no consensus is reached, it could return to Bonn, Germany, where the UN climate secretariat is based.
