The United Arab Emirates (UAE) emerged as the leading destination for Indian migrants, hosting 3.47 million individuals in 2020, as per the ‘World Migration Report 2024’ by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM). India received over $111 billion in remittances in 2022, the highest globally, marking a significant contribution to its economy. While India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh rank among the top 10 recipients of international remittances, South Asia faces challenges like financial exploitation and workplace abuse for migrant workers. Additionally, internal migration within India, influenced by climate and social factors, impacts food security outcomes, particularly for women-headed households.
