The UK has announced its withdrawal from the Energy Charter Treaty, joining several European countries in exiting the controversial agreement. The treaty, established in the 1990s to encourage international energy investment, has allowed fossil fuel companies to sue governments over climate policies through a secretive arbitration process. Efforts to negotiate a modernized treaty failed, leading to the decision to leave. France, Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands are also leaving the treaty, while the European Parliament has called for the entire EU to withdraw. The UK government deemed the treaty outdated and said that leaving it would support its transition to cleaner energy.
