The trial of Evan Gershkovich, a US journalist accused of espionage in Russia, will commence on June 26 behind closed doors, announced a court in Yekaterinburg. Gershkovich, a reporter for The Wall Street Journal, was arrested in March 2023 and has been held in Moscow’s Lefortovo prison. Russia alleges he spied for the CIA, collecting classified information on a local tank manufacturer. The US has dismissed the charges as lacking credibility, while the Journal condemned Russia’s actions as unjust. Gershkovich, facing up to 20 years in prison if convicted, is the first Western journalist arrested for spying in Russia since the Soviet era.
