Vedanta, led by Anil Agarwal, has restarted mining operations at the Bicholim mineral block in Goa, marking the first operational mine since the 2018 Supreme Court ban on mining in the state. The move is expected to create jobs and bolster the state’s economy. Vedanta acquired the Bicholim block through auction in 2022 and obtained environmental clearance in January 2024. Navin Jaju, CEO of Sesa Goa-Vedanta, sees this as a significant step for Goa’s progress, noting the historical contribution of mining to the state’s GDP. Goa CM Pramod Sawant hailed the resumption as a historic milestone, acknowledging the challenges faced during the mining ban.
