Tran Qui Thanh, the chairman of beverage group Tan Hiep Phat, was sentenced to eight years in prison in Vietnam’s latest high-profile fraud case. Thanh and his two daughters were found guilty of scamming investors by appropriating assets put up as collateral against loans issued in 2019 and 2020. Despite borrowers repaying the loans with interest, Thanh refused to return the assets, leading to convictions for fraud. Thanh’s daughter, Tran Uyen Phuong, received a four-year jail sentence, while his younger daughter, Tran Ngoc Bich, was given a suspended three-year sentence. The court described the defendants’ actions as causing danger to society and emphasized their deliberate commission of the crimes.
