WhatsApp and its parent company Meta have filed a petition in the Delhi High Court challenging India’s 2021 Information Technology Rules, which mandate social media platforms to trace chats and identify the originator of information. WhatsApp’s lawyer stated that the platform would exit India if encryption is to be broken to comply with the rules. The Central government insists on the necessity of tracing message originators for social security. WhatsApp argues that the rule violates user privacy and lacks global precedent. The case is scheduled for further hearing on August 14.
