The World Health Organisation (WHO) has designated the EG.5 strain of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, found in various parts of the world, including India, as a “variant of interest” (VOI). Although EG.5 exhibits increased prevalence, growth advantage, and immune escape properties, the WHO assesses the public health risk as low globally. EG.5 is a descendant of the Omicron subvariant XBB.1.9.2, with an additional mutation in the spike protein. The variant is currently not associated with changes in disease severity, but the WHO emphasizes the need for ongoing monitoring and research to address uncertainties.
