Parliament has approved amendments to India’s goods and services tax (GST) laws that introduce a 28% GST on the total value of bets in casinos, horse racing, and online gaming. The changes to the Central and Integrated GST laws passed the Lok Sabha and are now awaiting changes to state GST Acts. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman aims to implement the tax by October 1 and will review its impact six months later, with a focus on the online gaming sector’s effects on investments and jobs. The amendments are designed to regulate and tax online money gaming while excluding casual gaming without real money involvement.
