Breaking away from its alliance with the BJP, the Akali Dal is gearing up to contest the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha seat independently for the first time since 1996. The move comes after the Akali Dal’s split with the BJP over farm laws. The party has nominated Daljit Singh Cheema, its senior vice president, to contest the seat. Cheema, a local leader, dismisses BJP’s “outsider” allegations, emphasizing his roots in the constituency. Meanwhile, the BJP has named former MLA Dinesh Singh Babbu as its candidate, marking a departure from fielding Bollywood stars. The constituency, once a Congress stronghold, saw BJP’s success with film actors but faces challenges amid farmer protests and dissatisfaction with parachute candidates. Polling is slated for June 1.
