The Indian equity market gave up its early gains on the budget day (Thursday) and turned negative after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman completed her interim budget speech for FY24-25. The BSE Sensex closed down 106.81 points or 0.15% at 71,645.30, while the Nifty was down 28.20 points or 0.13% at 21,697.50. This marks a rare occurrence when the market has logged losses on a budget day. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) continued the outflow trend, selling (net) equities worth Rs 1,879.58 crore on Thursday. The muted market response is attributed to the budget aligning with expectations without major incentives.
