India’s Russian oil imports soared to a nine-month peak in April as shipments resumed via non-sanctioned tankers operated by Sovcomflot, Russia’s leading shipping company. Despite Western sanctions, India, the world’s third-largest oil importer, ramped up Russian oil imports to nearly 1.8 million barrels per day (bpd), comprising 38% of its total imports. This surge, up 8.2% from the previous month, reduced India’s reliance on Middle Eastern oil, notably from Iraq and Saudi Arabia. As Russia retains its top supplier status, India’s strategic diversification aims to navigate geopolitical challenges while meeting its energy demands.
