Two Japanese navy helicopters, carrying eight crew members, crashed in the Pacific Ocean south of Tokyo during a nighttime training flight. Defence Minister Minoru Kihara stated that one crew member was pronounced dead, while seven others remain missing. The cause of the crash is speculated to be a possible collision between the two SH-60K choppers. Flight data recorder and debris recovery efforts are underway to determine the cause. The Maritime Self Defence Force deployed warships and aircraft for search and rescue operations. The helicopters, modified Seahawks, were on anti-submarine training.
