The Madhya Pradesh High Court dismissed a petition by an interfaith couple seeking protection and registration of their marriage under the Special Marriage Act. Justice G. S. Ahluwalia stated that, according to Mahomedan law, a Muslim man marrying a Hindu woman is not valid, even under the Special Marriage Act. The court emphasized that while the Act allows marriages without certain rituals, it cannot legalize unions prohibited by personal law. The couple, Sarika Sen and Safee Khan, both 23, aimed to register their marriage but faced objections.
