A landslide in the Patkai Hills of Tinsukia district, Assam, on May 25 has left three miners feared dead in an illegal rat-hole coal mine. The incident occurred at Tikak colliery, where the missing workers—Dawa Sherpa from Nepal, and John and Phinal from Meghalaya—were trapped. Rescue efforts are ongoing, although the miners’ survival is uncertain. This hazardous mining region, which borders Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, has seen multiple fatalities, including a recent methane explosion in January that killed six miners. The dangerous combination of open-cast and rat-hole mining exacerbates the risk for those working in these illegal operations.
