Karnataka has joined Tamil Nadu and Goa in banning the use of certain harmful colouring agents in food products like cotton candy and gobi manchurian. A survey by the Public Health Department revealed the presence of harmful chemicals in samples collected, prompting the decision. Traces of sunset yellow, tartrazine, and rhodamine-b were found in unsafe samples. The ban has immediate effect, with penalties including license cancellation, fines up to ₹10 lakh, and jail terms up to life imprisonment for offenders. Health officials emphasize awareness among manufacturers and consumers, with random checks planned for adherence to regulations. Other popular food items like kebabs may also face scrutiny for harmful additives.
